Career Explorations

Welcome to Career Explorations! If you are a teen student (13-21 years old), live in the city of Seattle, and are looking for growth in employment and professional skills; here is the path! This is a paid learning experience for you to build skills and discover new opportunities for employment.

Where to Start:

  1. Mentorship

The 4-week mentorship opportunity is aimed at providing pre-employment skills for youth aged 13-21 interested in working with Seattle Parks and Recreation. This is the first step in order to qualify for future Career Explorations Internships. The teen SPR programs that qualify are: Career Explorations Mentorships and YESL/YES.

Career Explorations Spring Mentorships

  • 15-21 years old teens

  • $300 stipend

  • Hybrid 4-week course on Thursdays, and Saturdays

    • Spring Mentorship: 5/9-6/8/24

      • Thursdays: 4:30 - 6 p.m. (Virtual)
        Pre-Employment

      • Saturdays: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
        Food and Fitness

2. Internship

This 8-week internship will provide a more in-depth opportunity in recreation and employment opportunities within SPR for young adults aged 15-21.

If you have not participated in a SPR teen pre-employment program, please don't be worried. We have one more mentorship cohort for Career Explorations in the Spring (5/8-6/8). You can apply here for the Spring Mentorship opportunity, acceptance decisions will be emailed out on 4/10.

Spring 2024 Internships

  • 15+ years old and who have completed, or currently enrolled and projected to complete a Career Explorations Mentorship or other Seattle Parks & Recreation teen pre-employment program (YESL, YES, STEP)

  • 8-weeks running: 3/9/24 - 4/27/24

    • 7-Hours/Week

    • Wednesdays and Thursdays: 4:30 - 6 p.m. (Virtual)

    • Saturdays: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
      In-Person at Yelser Community Center

  • Pay: $19.97/hour
    (Roughly $1,118.32 earning potential for the full internship)

  • Application Closes: Wednesday, 2/21/24

  • Interview Slots @ Van Asselt Community Center:

    • Thursday 2/22/24

    • Friday 2/23/24

    • Saturday 2/24/24

Summer 2024 Internship

  • 15+ years old

  • 8-weeks running: 7/1/24 - 8/23/24

    • 20-Hours/Week

    • Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
      (In-Person, location to be determined)

    • No shifts: 7/4-7/5

    • Mandatory training days: 7/1-7/3, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

  • Pay: $19.97/hour
    (Roughly $3,195.20 earning potential for the full internship)

  • Application Closes: Wednesday, 6/6/24

Fall Internship

  • 15+ years old

Requirements

  1. An application letter which clearly describes:

    • Why you would be a good fit for this internship program.

    • An overview of any special skills and/or interest and achievements you may have.

  2. A current résumé of your educational, volunteer and or professional work experience. This can also include skills you may have and/or other accomplishments.

  3. Completed a Career Explorations mentorship of other SPR mentorship like YESL or YES.
